The Liverpool skipper has issued a scathing evaluation of Liverpool's disappointing championship campaign, admitting the reigning champions are in a mess and failing head coach Slot while questioning whether every player is owning up for the current downturn.

Van Dijk could not contain his frustration after Saturday’s heavy loss at Anfield by Nottingham Forest, a result that left Liverpool in the bottom half of the Premier League table with a deficit in goals. “Unacceptable” Start and Set-Piece Woes

“There was a great build-up to the match but in a game you are dealing with facts and the facts are we conceded a set piece in the first half and a terrible goal at the start of the second half,” stated Van Dijk. “As a team, we're certainly failing the manager, but we’ve disappointed ourselves as well. Start with self-reflection and then you support teammates, you work together to escape of this mess because at the moment it is a difficult situation – that's the reality.

Captain’s Challenge: Step Up

Van Dijk usually speaks the media after a match as part of his role as team leader. This time was distinct, however. He spoke was more forceful – audible enough that any player in the Anfield tunnel could listen in – and he expressed visible fury while challenging the dressing room to respond. “You should be angry,” he emphasized. “The key point for me is that everyone has to be accountable.” When questioned whether this is occurring, Van Dijk replied: “It's unclear. The Dutchman added: “This season we don’t have any consistency, we concede excessive scores, we are losing battles and all share the blame for it and I trust everyone sees that. We have to take responsibility to turn this around and tempting to point fingers but unity is essential. Past successes were collective and won the league and everyone was part of it, and when you go through a tough time you must remain united and not point fingers.

“Show character and confront the hardship and persist, again and again because surrendering is not an option then you are at the wrong place in my eyes, because this club has been going through many adversity over recent seasons and we’ve always come out of it. However, that doesn't imply it is straightforward, it’s exhausting but there is no other way.”

Looking Ahead

The upcoming match in the domestic league is a visit to London Stadium next weekend, after the Champions League fixture of the Dutch side in the Champions League. Van Dijk commented: “Wednesday is another opportunity so what am I going to do, dwell on the loss? No, I'll return and analyze how we can turn this around and I trust that is what everyone is doing as well.”
