Trumpism's most illuminating and defining moments – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of a few weeks, the nation's leader started showing all observers his plans for an ornate dance hall twice the size than the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the East Wing to erect it.
He has done things countless times more severe – the current estimate of fatalities due to his slashing to foreign assistance is 600,000 and rising, and this week a study forecast his petroleum strategies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – really, no other president would have conceived – solo demolishing major areas of the presidential residence in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of multiple the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom conduct transactions with federal agencies.

That is those of us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have watched throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we grew up with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into a figure of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in scripture; this change developed more gradually, over decades rather than months, yet it remains disconcerting through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Jesus that I grew up with, as conceptually Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and since the fastest-growing cadre within America could have minimal awareness of him since they are atheists or doubters or nones. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of great price within Christian narrative.

The apparent and direct fact that Christ from scripture calls for a type of extreme compassion centered on the poor is what has always made Christianity somewhat of a scandalous religion: engaging for the masses, but owing to its inherent radicalness demanding to be controlled. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Highest Within Us
So I have been inspired to observe the steadfast resistance against Trump develop in this past year. It has been substantial consolation to help build the initiative that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated voters to participate in large quantities during minor elections.
