The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

All in all, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.

The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is a little off.

Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.

This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
