The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a young woman harboring multiple human souls within her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate personas, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips show the protagonist exploring a desolate church.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to each person."
The central mechanic involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will change against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their necks are. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four personas claims that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one standing could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
