Boxing is in a notable downturn this year, with few major fights and considerably fewer compelling bouts than typical. The prospect of a important and captivating heavyweight clash between Joseph Parker and Fabio Wardley at the O₂ Arena offers a welcome respite to the challenged industry. This is the 40th contest for Parker and, apart from three losses, he has been dropped multiple times by different opponents. He consistently rises but Wardley hits harder than anyone he has faced – with the exclusion of Wilder who seemed a shadow of a power puncher when Parker swept to a dominant decision win in late 2023.

Wardley, previously a white-collar fighter, who only took up boxing when he was twenty, had zero amateur background and has consistently faced doubts about his comparatively limited skills. But he is similarly close to a opportunity for the championship.

“This is the biggest bout, at the moment, in the heavyweight category. These two guys have accepted the challenge when neither fighter needed to make this fight. Joe Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have previously mandated Usyk to fight him, but the Ukrainian was sidelined. Joseph insists on fighting.

“Fabio is also in a fantastic position and he could have just waited for his opportunity. He said ‘No, thanks.’ He wanted to fight – and against Parker because it provides him a shot to jump the queue.”

The View from Parker

Parker, set to be 34 in January, said: “This is all or nothing. I am not thinking about losing. I have respect for my rival and his achievements and his preparation for this bout. But I am on a higher plane and I am planning to demonstrate it on the day of the bout.”

Wardley's Stance

Wardley turns 31 in December, and he said: “It is a massive night for the both of us. It is obviously the biggest fight of my career and the biggest fight of my life. But each time I rise to the occasion I elevate my performance. The upcoming fight will be the same. The divide between Parker's status and my perceived standing has been a common theme in my boxing life.

“He has vast experience for a long time, with a many bouts on his resume. By no means is he an old man but he has been in the sport for a significant time and had numerous grueling matches. I’ve been in a few wars myself and I understand they take a toll. He has been in a significantly more of those fights than I have.”

The Final Verdict

But the general belief is that Parker will be too veteran, and too skilled, for his opponent. He is favored to secure a grueling encounter with the belief that he is the leading contender for a title shot against Usyk – still the world’s best heavyweight by a significant margin.
